The Hermeneutical Circle

THE HERMENEUTICAL CIRCLE

Everyone comes to a study of the Bible with some presuppositions, e.g., everything the Bible says is true
on its own authority. No one arrives at this presupposition unless he has been regenerated by the Spirit
of God, who inspired and illuminates Scripture. There are five other presuppositions that govern
biblical study:

  1. The inspiration of the Bible
  2. The unity and diversity in the Bible
  3. The unity of the sense of Scripture
  4. The various styles (genre) of Scripture
  5. The right of Individuals to interpret Scripture for themselves

Because of the correct and erroneous presuppositions we bring to the text, there needs to be a continuous
evaluation to ensure interpretive harmony of the Scriptures; hence, “the circle of successive
approximation.”
