Pericope and Grammatical Analysis

In narratives, the unit of thought is a self-contained story or pericope, not a paragraph as in the
letters/epistles. In this type of literature one must note how the grammar of the book sets off one
pericope from another (often chronological or geographical transitions are present). Then one must ask
how the themes, lessons, doctrines, etc. stressed in the individual pericope fit into the overall message of
the book.

Line diagramming of the Greek text is the visual display of the grammar and syntax of a sentence to
portray the structural relationships of its words, phrases, and clauses.

Block diagramming of the Hebrew and English text emphasizes phrase, clause and sentence relationships
within paragraphs. Block diagramming is a very practical device for outlining passages.
